David Bryce Payne’s nine-year ownership of Point of Honor may have brought further dramatic changes to the appearance of the mansion.
The Italianate Villa style front porch, which survived on the house until restoration began in the late 1960s, is similar in design to the house Payne built circa 1859 in town at the corner of 11th and Federal Streets. The idea of remodeling an older home with updated design elements was very popular in the Lynchburg area at mid-century. Given Payne's interest in the Italianate style and the general popularity it enjoyed in the area, it seems reasonable to suspect that Payne made these changes to Point of Honor.
